Homeschooling Does Not Have to Be Perfect

By LaTrecia Doyle-Thaxton

When I started homeschooling I was overwhelmed!

I went to all the school sections in every store that had one and purchased all the visual aids I thought they would need for math, reading, spelling, etc.

I am not saying they were not helpful however, the children learned more with the aids we created together.

At the time, it was new to me and was more concerned about making a good impression for those who knew I was homeschooling (inspectors) rather than making a space for those that were being homeschooled.

Fear was driving our experience in the beginning because I did not want to fail.

What I learned from the ‘religious’ homeschool curriculums are your homeschool life must be spirit led, therefore the children will be spirit fed.

I’m listening

My curriculum was incorporated with the school system, not any homeschool programs because at the time we were working with a teacher who had never homeschooled and therefore we used her guidance as well as the direction from the office admin of the school district.

It was difficult because I felt I couldn’t implement what I was led to do. I felt lost at times although I found ways to make it happen.

My cousin inspired me to homeschool and I met a family who had been doing so for a while and they made me feel more confident in what I wanted to teach.

In other words, find your tribe!

When you work with those who have the same interests, your understanding changes and the children’s understanding would be fruitful.

It didn’t dawn on me that the teachings I provided was working out for our good but time was wasted by implementing a system that did not need to be in place for us.

Today, I have a high schooler, middle schooler and pre-kindergartner.

They each have a different learning style but they all want what they see on TV like riding the bus, other children around, and lockers.

To combat this, we take tours around different cities we visit on tour buses, go to parks where other children are, and allow them to have their own lockers for sitting things in at places we visit when they are available, to show I am listening.

We also discuss the increased germs that are transferred and how illnesses can affect learning when you have to stay home from school, as well as bullying, school shootings and more practical things to learn than remembering locker combinations.

I’m an advocate for homeschooling because life teaches lessons schools don’t.

Schools have been long overdue for teaching financial literacy and are removing history rapidly. These are tools we implemented early on.

Mindfulness

Including mindfulness and spiritual alignment with food (without food coloring) and energy, give them purpose and balance instead of struggling to find themselves later in life.

Food without food coloring

We have a four day week but we teach and learn daily.

Hip-Hop Mogul Jay-Z came out of retirement again and bared his soul in an album through number sequencing with the 4:44 album, touching on subjects that could be used to create a homeschool curriculum all on its own.

Before the album, number sequences were noticed all the time and each sequence meant something different. I started seeing 111 and 1111 all the time and everywhere. Then I would mention it to others and started seeing they have a meaning in certain circles that believe in numerology like Hindus and Christians.

Number Sequencing Example

But 444, resonated with us as we have a 4 hour, 4 day and 4 week schedule, 5th weeks we rest although its only a few days or months at a time.

We are guided

We are guided by the ancestors, sun, moon, seasons and colors of the chakras.

Happy Summer Solstice

This helped me to understand our purpose from the beginning and later helped to calm the anxiety of trying to teach my way and not the way of the masses.

The reason children are homeschooled is to unlearn what we as parents were taught that we knew didn’t amount to anything (like square dancing), we do not have to learn the same way as everyone else just to be productive in society.

Sending positive Inner-G

  1. […] Candles, sage, palo santos, and incense are always in the midst and by 7 a.m., it’s time for coffee and get the day prepared for homeschool. […]
