5 Strategies to Help Stop Negative Energy from Dominating Your Body

By LaTrecia

As a homeschool mom, dealing with teenager hormones, we are not exempt from depression or anxiety.

When I notice a change in the ways they behave, I try to address it right away, so that they know I’m present and there for them. I let them know that I too struggled in some areas at that age and what I wish had happened.

I also let them know I am grateful to be the one they have to talk to.

It’s common for individuals to experience negative self-talk or self-criticism, and this can often manifest as the mind dominating or “bullying” the body. However, there are a few strategies you can use to help stop this pattern.

1. Practice mindfulness: Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. When you notice negative thoughts or self-criticism arising, try to observe them without becoming attached or reacting to them.

In our home nutrition, yoga, and meditation are practices we engage in.

2. Challenge negative thoughts: When negative thoughts arise, challenge them by asking yourself if they are true. Are you really “ugly” or “worthless”? Often, negative thoughts are exaggerations or distortions of reality.

TLC made a song some years ago called “Unpretty” introduced my girls to the song because I know social media, movies and music videos gives a distorted view of what beauty standards are. I’m so glad they understood.

3. Practice self-compassion: Treat yourself with the same kindness and compassion that you would offer to a friend. Be understanding and gentle with yourself, and avoid harsh self-judgment.

4. Focus on your strengths: Instead of dwelling on perceived flaws, focus on your positive attributes and strengths. Everyone has unique qualities that make them special and valuable.

In all my children when I recognize they have interest, I help them turn it into a skill. It boosts their confidence and show the others that look less ke them as well.

5. Seek professional help: If negative self-talk is affecting your daily life and well-being, consider seeking the help of a mental health professional. They can provide additional strategies and support to help you overcome this pattern.

Therapy may not be for everyone, but you won’t know until you try.
