Breaking Curses & Building Legacies: Celebrating One Milestone in Our Homeschool Journey

By La Trecia Doyle-Thaxton

Introduction: A Major Milestone, But the Journey Continues

Homeschooling has never just been about academics for our family—it’s been about freedom, growth, and breaking generational curses. And right now, we’re celebrating a huge milestone as one of my three children is graduating from homeschool at just 16 years old!

But let’s be clear—this is just one win along the way. I still have two more incredible students, Meme (15) and Boūkmon (7), who are on their own unique journeys. This isn’t the end of homeschooling for us—it’s a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate how far we’ve come while still moving forward.

Homeschooling: More Than Just Books & Tests

From the start, I wanted my children to experience education beyond the walls of our home. I wanted them to connect with the 9 areas of people activity and see the world firsthand.

That meant:
Black history museums for a deeper understanding of our roots.
Butterfly exhibits & zoos to bring science to life.
Doctors & dentist visits to teach real-world health awareness.
Art & science museums to inspire curiosity and creativity.
Boat rides & nature walks to show them the beauty of exploration.

Every trip, every lesson, every experience was designed to give them a well-rounded perspective—to teach them that learning happens everywhere, not just in textbooks.

Breaking Cycles, One Graduate at a Time

Homeschooling wasn’t just about academics—it was about changing the narrative:
Breaking the curse of limited education opportunities.
Breaking the curse of teenage pregnancy.
Breaking the curse of parent-child disconnect.
Breaking the belief that success only comes from traditional schooling.

And here we are—one child successfully homeschooled from start to finish, graduating at 16, with goals, ambition, and a bright future ahead. That’s a victory. But the work isn’t done yet!

Still Homeschooling, Still Growing

With Meme and Boūkmon still learning, I’m not hanging up my homeschool hat anytime soon. I’m still:
💡 Helping Meme develop her skills and interests (she’s loving crocheting right now!).
💡 Encouraging Boūkmon’s hands-on creativity with Legos and car building.
💡 Continuing to evolve our homeschool approach so that each child gets what they need.

One graduate down, two more to go!

What This Milestone Means for Me

As a homeschooling mom, I’ve poured so much into my children’s education—but this milestone also reminds me to pause and celebrate myself. Because this is my win, too.

So, I’m embracing this moment of gratitude and joy by:
✔️ Refining my own goals— completing my Journal Therapy course and growing my Reiki practice.
✔️ Stepping deeper into my own purpose— making sure my work reaches the people who need it.
✔️ Taking care of myself— because homeschooling while being a wife, mom, and entrepreneur requires balance.

This is just one milestone along the journey, and I’m grateful for every step of it.

To the Homeschool Parents Still in the Trenches…

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, wondering if you’re doing enough—let me remind you:

💫 You ARE enough.
💫 Every effort you make is planting a seed.
💫 One day, you’ll look back and see the legacy you built with your own hands.

This homeschooling journey is far from over for me, but this milestone reminds me why I started in the first place.

To all the homeschoolers, cycle breakers, and legacy builders out there—keep going. The work you’re doing is bigger than you know.
