Forget January 1st—Your New Year Starts When You Say So!
The phrase “New Year, New You” is thrown around every January, but let’s be real—who decided the new year should start in the dead of winter? Many ancient civilizations, including Kemet (Ancient Egypt), the Babylonians, Persians, and even early Europeans, saw the new year as a time of rebirth and renewal aligned with natural cycles.
If you’re tired of forcing yourself into resolutions on January 1st when your spirit isn’t ready, it’s time to reclaim your own rhythm. Whether it’s the spring equinox, the rising of Sirius, or even a personal milestone, your new year starts when you say so!
And to help you set the tone for your personal new year, I’ve created the “Bloom & Prosper: A Year of Empowerment” Planner—a tool designed to help you align with the cycles that work for YOU, not society’s imposed timelines. (Grab yours here: Bloom & Prosper Planner)
Let’s break down the true origins of New Year’s celebrations and why “New Year, New You” is a mindset, not a date on the calendar.
Kemet (Ancient Egypt) – Wepet Renpet: The True New Year
In Ancient Kemet (Egypt), the new year wasn’t January 1st but instead tied to the heliacal rising of Sirius (Sopdet/Sothis), which happened around July 19th.
This celestial event signaled the annual flooding of the Nile River (Akhet season), bringing fertility, abundance, and divine renewal.
- Sirius = Isis (Auset), the divine mother.
- Floodwaters = The tears of Auset, mourning Asar (Osiris), bringing life to the land.
- Symbolism = Rebirth, cosmic alignment, and renewal.
Temples honored this time with rituals, offerings, and processions to prepare for new beginnings. Imagine if we based our New Year on something truly divine—the renewal of the land and spirit—rather than just flipping a page on the calendar.
New Year in Other Cultures: Following the Natural Flow
If you look beyond the modern calendar, you’ll see that many cultures celebrated the new year in alignment with nature’s cycles.
1. Spring Equinox (March 20-21) – The Cosmic Reset
Many cultures saw spring as the start of a new cycle—longer days, new growth, and balance between light and dark.
- Persian New Year (Nowruz): Still celebrated today, marking rebirth with feasts and fire rituals.
- Babylonian Akitu Festival: Honoring the battle of renewal between order and chaos.
- Celtic Ostara: The root of “Easter,” celebrating renewal with eggs and fertility symbols.
Spring is when nature resets itself—why shouldn’t we?
2. Roman New Year – March 1st
Before Julius Caesar changed the calendar, March 1st was the new year in Rome.
- Named after Mars, the god of action and growth.
- Symbolized new beginnings and warrior energy.
- January was later chosen to honor the god Janus (the past & future).
But even the Romans knew—waiting for spring made more sense than celebrating in winter.
3. Lunar New Year (Late January – February)
Based on the first new moon after the winter solstice, Lunar New Year is tied to the moon’s cycles rather than a man-made date.
- Chinese New Year, Tet (Vietnam), and other lunar festivals all align with natural energy shifts.
- It focuses on ancestor veneration, clearing old energy, and setting powerful intentions.
If you’ve ever felt that January resolutions don’t stick, it’s because the energy isn’t aligned yet!
So When Should You Celebrate Your New Year?
The answer is simple: whenever it makes sense for YOU.
- Is the Spring Equinox your time for fresh starts?
- Do you feel renewed in summer when Sirius rises?
- Is your birthday your real “New Year” moment?
- Does fall feel like a fresh start as nature transitions?
“New Year, New You” isn’t about a date—it’s about aligning with your own energetic cycle.
