Hey Nubian Souls,
Welcome back to Something Nubian!
Today, on this Soular Plexus Day, we’re diving into a journey of self-discovery, empowerment, and cultural resonance as we explore the chakras through the lens of melanated experiences. Buckle up for a ride through movies and shows that align with each energy center, bringing positive vibes to our melanin-rich community.
Root Chakra (Muladhara): “Crooklyn”
In the streets of a vibrant neighborhood, “Crooklyn” beautifully captures the essence of family roots, resilience, and the strength found within our communities. It’s a cinematic embrace of our connection to one another, where some of us come from, and the power embedded in our roots.

Sacral Chakra (Svadhisthana): “Insecure”
Issa Rae takes us on a journey of self-discovery and relationships in “Insecure.” This show paints a colorful picture of the melanated experience, exploring love, laughter, and the beautiful messiness of life. This definitely was not a show I could watch with the kiddos but was saddened when it ended.

Solar Plexus Chakra (Manipura): “Hidden Figures”
“Hidden Figures” celebrates the brilliance, strength, and empowerment of melanated women at NASA. It’s a powerful reminder of the fire within, breaking barriers and reaching for the stars. I am not sure if Pharrell Williams had not produced this film would we even know about these great women at all? Every woman of color and family should see this film.

Heart Chakra (Anahata): “This Is Us”
Join the Pearson family in “This Is Us” as they navigate the complexities of love, family, and connection. This show beautifully portrays the diverse and melanated experience, touching our hearts with its authenticity, all six seasons.

Throat Chakra (Vishuddha): “Dreamgirls”
“Dreamgirls” takes center stage, exploring the power of voice and expression in the challenging world of music. It’s a soulful journey that resonates with the struggles and triumphs of finding one’s voice. I recall when I was a young girl hearing the voice of Jennifer Holiday as she belted out “And I am Telling You” and then sung by my aunt; when the movie came out I was front and center, there were three generations who watched in awe of this film, my mother, self and daughters.

Third Eye Chakra (Ajna): “Black Lightning”
Enter the world of “Black Lightning,” a superhero series that goes beyond the physical realm. With a focus on intuition, justice, and societal challenges, it’s a melanated journey into the realms of possibility and inner vision. This show had a really nice run and seeing a balanced household really showed that representation mattered.

Crown Chakra (Sahasrara): “The Great Debaters”
“The Great Debaters” uplifts the spirit, centering on intellectual growth, spiritual awareness, and the pursuit of higher education. It’s a cinematic gem that aligns with the energy of the crown chakra, inspiring us to reach for the highest peaks of knowledge.

As we explore these cinematic and televised gems, let’s bask in the positive energy they bring to our melanated experience. Each story, a vibrant thread in the tapestry of our journey, reminding us of the beauty, strength, and wisdom that reside within. If you have not seen any of these shows or movies, check them out and come back and visit this blog to tell me what you think. And if you have do you agree with the comparison? Why or why not?
This was fun and I will do this again. Stay tuned for more positive inner-G, more melanin magic, right here on Something Nubian.
Sending positive inner-G,
La Trecia Doyle-Thaxton
