STEM is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. This culture is deeply rooted in discovery, hands-on and can benefit from a little self-education. Learning these subjects can definitely make power moves in your career path, especially entrepreneurs.
As a mother who home schools two young minds of six and eight they are introduced to a little bit of everything. It is true that some children who are educated at home have less social interaction with others but this does not mean they don’t get to use what they learn with those they come in contact with. Home schooled children are out of the box thinkers and are chosen for a number of reasons such as lack of trust in the public school system and funds for private institutions.
STEM is said to improve critical thinking and problem solving
As soon as my children were able to comprehend I introduced them to tools needed to communicate and songs to increase their memory of what they learned. As melinated individuals, education is important than social skills as it does not gain employment or the inclination to own your own company. A lot of children in poverty are not exposed to reading or comprehension and it has long term effects on their willingness to learn more due not having the confidence or support. Their parents either work too many jobs to spend the time, their money is funneled to bills and they themselves may not have cared for education either, creating additional slum and blight. I was told before, the difference between those living in poverty and those that do not, are the amount of words they know by the time they reach school age. I began to encourage my children to learn new words and the dictionary early on so that when they hear a word they are not baffled or have to pretend they understand.
To combat becoming a statistic, by age 4, I introduced them to letters, colors, numbers, planets, calendars and spiritual awareness (chakras) early. I wanted their confidence to have a fair chance. Like most children technology was easy to understand for them, much more than using a piece of paper and pencil, so they know how to type some and how certain functions of what they are using operate such as wi-fi, hotspots, and routers. Age really is nothing but a number, technology ain’t nothing but a thang and is really not for just ivy-league rich individuals, the access is available if you are truly interested in learning. Library cards are still free in this area, so if I did not have the Internet we definitely would be there.
STEM is said to improve critical thinking and problem solving. I have high expectations and would love for these children to start their own businesses, understand e-commerce and B2B, barter and trade, and also financial freedom through understanding that numbers are truly infinite. Children need to have the understanding most successful business owners started right where they were, at home, maybe not home schooled but definitely home, like Micheal Dell and Steve Jobs.
After doing some research I found there are free sites that provide information as well as a nonprofit organization. I have an Associated Degree but also am post self-taught so I know I will start with free consultations, webinars, and how-tos and also include the children.
I have used udemy.com for low-cost learning and found sites such as Hack the Hood, Black tech week, khanacademy.com and many others that can be used to teach coding and app development. I am looking forward to these children having an optimal learning experience in improving their knowledge.
